For 38 years Robert Fowler held some of the most senior positions in the Departments of Foreign Affairs and National Defence. He served as a foreign policy advisor to 5 Prime Ministers, and as Chair of the UN Angola Sanctions Committee he was instrumental in disrupting the trade in blood diamonds. In 2008 Fowler was abducted by Al-Qaeda while serving as the UN Secretary General’s Special Representative to Niger. He spent three months in captivity in the Sahara Desert. The ideas worked through with us came out in this interview with CTV a week later.

Michael Valpy writes about ideas, religion and politics for the Globe and Mail. During his long career at the Globe, he has been a reporter, Toronto and Ottawa based national political columnist, member of the editorial board, deputy managing editor, and Africa-based correspondent during the last years of apartheid. After riding along with Michael Ignatieff on his summer tour, Michael Valpy got off the bus and led a discussion about the Liberal leader and Canadian politics. The main themes of our conversation came out in this article, published a few days later.

Deborah Campbell is an award-winning writer who has spent the past decade reporting from such places as Iran, Syria, Lebanon, Qatar, Colombia, Cuba, and Russia. Much of her work is immersive journalism that involves living among the societies she covers. She teaches narrative nonfiction writing at the University of British Columbia. She joined us for the discussion of the media and the Middle East, drawing from this article, for which she won a Gold National Magazine Award.

Erna Paris began her writing career as a magazine journalist, book reviewer, and radio documentary broadcaster (in French and English) before writing books of literary non-fiction. She is the author of seven acclaimed books of literary non-fiction and the winner of ten national and international writing awards, including a gold medal from the National Magazine Awards Foundation, a bronze medal from The White Award for local issues reporting (Canada-US), and four Media Club of Canada awards for feature writing and radio documentary.
