Maher Arar was abducted at New York’s JFK Airport in 2002 while trav- elling home to Ottawa after a vacation in Tunisia. The CIA took the Syrian- born Canadian citizen to Syria, where he was imprisoned without charge and tortured.

These events presented his wife — Monia Mazigh —with a very difficult choice. She could keep quiet, raise her children, and hope for her hus- band’s release. Or she could speak out and fight for justice.
